Directly from the exhibition, Noncitizen Studio, at Mångkulturellt centrum in Fittja with artist Sandi Shadood and the host Sabbe Mezher.
Being a queer artist from Iraq, Sandi Shadood’s practice primarily engages with questions of identity. She uses abstraction to translate her thoughts, which are connected to her ancestral history. The work Mesopotamia departs from Sumerian cuneiform, the ancient Sumer language. It is one of the world’s oldest attested languages, dating back to at least 3000 BC, spoken in what was once known as Mesopotamia in modern-day Iraq.
Sumerian cuneiform developed from the pictographs and other symbols used to represent trade goods and livestock on clay tablets. This painting contains a paragraph that is one of the rules in Sumer, and it means: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.”
